Online Media - Small Islands

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

In India there are four to five online media companies which are operating on greater level.

I would like to share a trend in India in Online Media sphere.

Most of the big companies having headcount 100 - 200 are producing new islands.

Some smart delivery heads, VPs, are opening their own companies. I have seen some companies taking birth in this sector.

Search Avenues, Resultrix are one of them. I personally feel that though these new companies are not as much branded

as big companies but they really produce the result, which is more important in Online Media field. The dynamics of this field is changing so dramatically that every MD’s of big companies are filling their strategic position from altogether diffrent field.

There are few companies which has 2-3 projects are really performing better than bigger brands.

The expertise of SEM, SEO, PPC, Web Anlytics are not now arcane things for even midle level employees of the companies. In nut shell i would like to sum up ” India is now in great transformational phase of Online Media.

Yahoo Expands in India

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

Source - Washington Post: Yahoo is establishing a lab in Bangalore, India, where the company already has research and development (R&D) operations. While the current R&D done by Yahoo in India is focused on new products and engineering, the focus of the new lab will be on long-term research, a spokeswoman for the company said Tuesday.

Yahoo Labs Bangalore will be a center of excellence for next generation search and advertising technologies, focused on making the Web more relevant and simple for users and advertisers, Yahoo said.

The company has hired Rajeev Rastogi, who has moved from head of Bell Labs India to lead the new lab, and assemble a team of scientists and engineers to focus on new approaches to information extraction and machine learning, multimedia and query processing, the company said.

It did not provide details of the number of staff it plans to hire for the lab. The company plans to hire sociologists, micro-economists, and computational scientists among other categories of staff for the lab, the spokeswoman said.

Yahoo already employs some 1,500 staff in India, which it plans to take to over 2,000 by the end of this year. Yahoo Research & Development is involved in the development of some of Yahoo’s key products and services such as mobile Internet and search.

Yahoo has similar labs in New York, Santiago, and Barcelona, along with Santa Clara, Burbank and Berkeley in California.

Google Loves India

Google IndiaGoogle IndiaGoogle IndiaEconomic Times: India is fast becoming Google’s delight. Google India has already become the second-largest operation for Google worldwide in terms of employee numbers. The Google operations in Gurgaon, Bangalore, Mumbai and Hyderabad put together, make for the highest number of Googlers outside the United States. India has also emerged as the highest growth market for Google in terms of advertising revenues.

“India is a very important part of our operations, globally. We have had a large engineering and operations presence through the R&D centre and global sales & support centres in India. But, the focus in the recent times has been to ramp up the market-facing capabilities for servicing the Indian market. This part is expected to clock the highest growth for Google India in the coming quarters,” said Google India Managing Director Shailesh Rao.

The Google team in India is also concentrating on developing non-Hindi and non-English capabilities for mobile device users. “We are looking at ways to provide information to users who are usually challenged with respect to access by providing transliteration capabilities while they are on the move, just as we have done for our online products.”

Last year, dovetailing its development effort with the Indian requirements, Google extended the reach of its products to non-Hindi and non-English speakers by offering transliteration capability on blogger, search and also on Orkut.

“The strategic importance that Google attaches to its India operations is fairly obvious given that there are few countries that have the growth profile and the scale or the structural opportunity as is presented by this one country. It is the largest democracy where sharing of information is centre-stage. With the youth demographics of this country, everything is centered around knowledge and sharing of information. That is precisely the need that we are here to satiate,” said Rao.
